Two 1-Inch Sensors, Two Different Drones
The DJI Mini 5 Pro broke the rules: a sub-250g drone with a full 1-inch sensor — the same sensor size found in the Air 3S. For the first time, DJI's "mini" category genuinely threatens its own mid-range. But having the same sensor doesn't mean identical capabilities. These drones are built for different priorities, and the right choice depends entirely on what matters most to you.
Size, Weight, and What It Means
The Mini 5 Pro weighs around 249g — nearly three times lighter than the Air 3S at 724g. That difference cascades through everything: the Mini 5 Pro doesn't require FAA registration for recreational use, fits in a jacket pocket, and clears most international drone regulations without paperwork.
The Air 3S's larger frame means better wind resistance, more battery capacity, and room for a dual-camera system. In moderate wind, the Air 3S holds position and altitude with noticeably more confidence than the Mini.
Camera Quality
Both share a 1-inch 50MP main sensor shooting 4K/60fps in 10-bit D-Log M. In real-world side-by-side tests, differences are subtle. The Mini 5 Pro shows slightly better dynamic range thanks to DJI's dual ISO fusion system — more shadow detail in high-contrast scenes. The Air 3S counters with its second telephoto camera: a 3x optical zoom on a 1/1.3-inch sensor that eliminates the need for digital cropping.
For vertical content creators, the Mini 5 Pro wins decisively. Its 225° gimbal rotation physically flips the camera for full 4K vertical video. The Air 3S shoots vertical at 2.7K only and with a narrower field of view.
Flight Performance
The Air 3S flies for up to 45 minutes versus the Mini 5 Pro's 36. That's nearly 50% more air time per battery — a real advantage for long sessions. The Air 3S also feels more planted in wind, holding its line through gusts that push the Mini around.
The Mini 5 Pro's O4+ transmission offers slightly better interference resistance in complex environments (dense urban, thick forest), though both drones share the same 20km max range and 1080p/60fps live preview.
The Verdict
Choose the Mini 5 Pro if: portability is your top priority, you travel frequently, you shoot vertical content for social media, you want to avoid registration requirements, or you need to fly internationally with minimal regulatory hassle.
Choose the Air 3S if: you want longer flight times, need optical zoom for versatile framing, prioritize stability in wind, or prefer the security of a larger airframe with forward LiDAR.
Both drones take the same DJI RC 2 and RC Pro 2 controllers. If you already own one, switching between drones is seamless.
