Editing Drone Footage: Log Profiles, LUTs & Rolling Shutter

Drone footage looks different than ground video — wider dynamic range from high-altitude sun, rolling shutter distortion at speed, and log color profiles that need grading before delivery. Here's the working post-production workflow for turning raw drone footage into video a client will actually accept.

Log profiles — what they are and when to use them

Log (logarithmic) color profiles are camera settings that capture a flatter, wider-dynamic-range signal than standard REC.709 output. Common on prosumer drones: D-Log, D-Log M, HLG, and manufacturer-specific variants. Log footage looks washed-out and low-contrast straight out of the camera; it's meant to be graded in post-production.

LUTs — the fast path from log to graded

Look-Up Tables (LUTs) are color transformations that map one color space to another. In drone workflows, LUTs typically fall into two categories:

Working sequence: technical LUT first (bring log back to normal color space), then creative LUT for style, then final tweaks (exposure, saturation, targeted adjustments). Applying creative LUTs directly to log footage without the technical conversion produces unpredictable results.

Rolling shutter — why fast drone shots look weird

Most consumer and prosumer drone cameras use CMOS sensors with rolling shutters — the sensor reads out top-to-bottom rather than capturing the full frame simultaneously. When the aircraft moves quickly (or the subject moves through the frame), the top and bottom of the frame capture at slightly different times, producing skew, wobble, or jello effect.

Stabilization — hardware, software, and both

Modern drone gimbals produce remarkably stable footage in most conditions. Post-production stabilization is for the edge cases — wind conditions the gimbal couldn't handle, cinematic movement smoothing, and finishing polish.

Stabilization applied to already-stable footage costs sharpness and can introduce warping artifacts. Use only where needed.

Frame rate and shutter considerations

Standard drone video is 4K30 for most deliverables. Higher frame rates (60p, 120p) enable slow-motion in post. Shutter speed rule: 2x the frame rate for natural motion blur (30p = 1/60s shutter). Rigid adherence in bright conditions requires ND filters — see ND filters for drones.

Software workflow — from card to client

  1. Offload the cards. Copy raw footage to your working SSD before you turn the aircraft off — SD card corruption is real.
  2. Ingest into your NLE. Create a project, import footage, verify frame rate and color space match your intended deliverable.
  3. Rough cut. Assemble the shots in order without color or effects work. Test the pacing.
  4. Fine cut. Trim to final duration, tighten transitions.
  5. Color and grade. Technical LUT first if shooting log, then creative grading, then final tweaks.
  6. Stabilization pass on shots that need it. Sparingly.
  7. Audio. Music, effects, ambient. Drone audio from the aircraft itself is usually unusable; source audio from libraries or capture separately.
  8. Export at the deliverable's spec. Client-preferred codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  9. Deliver via shared link. Frame.io, Vimeo Review, Google Drive, or client's preferred platform.
