The current U.S. baseline

FAA guidance updated August 10, 2026 says rechargeable lithium batteries from 0–100 Wh are allowed on passenger aircraft; 101–160 Wh batteries require air-carrier approval; batteries over 160 Wh are forbidden. Spare lithium batteries and power banks must be carried on, not checked.

Installed versus spare

A battery installed in a portable electronic device can have different baggage treatment than a spare. If a lithium-powered device goes in checked baggage, FAA guidance requires it to be completely powered off and protected from accidental activation/damage.
